Why see an Osteopath?

Introduction

Osteopathy is a holistic healthcare discipline that focusses on the musculoskeletal system to treat various conditions. Osteopathy has gained much popularity over the years, with high patient satisfaction ratings.  In this post, we will ask is osteopathy effective and answer the questions, “why see an osteopath” and “when to see an osteopath”, as well as when not to see an osteopath!”

Understanding osteopathy

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that focuses on the interrelationship between the structure and functions of the body. It involves hands-on techniques to improve circulation and correct altered biomechanics, without using drugs or surgery. Osteopaths work with the principle that the body has an innate ability to heal and treatment is tailored to the individual to achieve this goal.

The practice was founded in 1874 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still, who was disillusioned with the harmful side effects of drugs used in conventional medicine. He proposed a more holistic approach that focused on enhancing health, rather than merely treating disease. This is still true to this day.

Why See an osteopath?

One of the primary reasons people visit an osteopath is for fast help with musculoskeletal problems like back pain, neck pain, sciatica, trapped nerves, tension headaches, circulatory problems and digestive issues. Waiting times on the NHS for physiotherapy referral are long and private osteopathy is a fast alternative.

Osteopathic treatment aims to restore balance within and between all systems of your body – musculoskeletal, circulatory, nervous, respiratory and digestive – to promote overall health. The techniques used by osteopaths are gentle and considered safe for all age groups.

Published satisfaction surveys

The Institute of Osteopathy published these findings in the most recent patient satisfaction survey:

  • 96% of osteopathic patients said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their care.
  • 98% of patients said their experience of osteopathy was good or very good.
  • After 1 week, 89% of patients report some level of improvement in their symptoms.
  • At 6 weeks, 96% of osteopathic patients report improvement or recovery

There is good evidence that osteopathic manual therapy reduces pain and disability while improving function and range of movement for musculoskeletal problems including low back pain, neck pain, shoulder dysfunction, headaches arising from the neck, and pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain.

Are osteopaths worth going to?

The answer to this question largely depends on your personal health goals and preferences. If you prefer a holistic approach to health care that treats the root cause of your problem rather than just the symptoms, then osteopathy combined with functional medicine may very well be worth considering.

Patients who have visited New Dawn Health often report improvements not only in their specific conditions but also in their overall well-being. They appreciate the personalised care they receive and the emphasis on self-management strategies that empower them to take charge of their health through realistic diet and lifestyle changes.

However, it’s essential to remember that like any other form of healthcare, results from osteopathy can vary from person to person. What works for one individual may not work for another. Therefore, it’s crucial to have open communication with your osteopath about your expectations and any concerns and specific needs you may have.

Dawn has a beautiful treatment room which is like a little oasis of calm. She has helped me enormously with a recurring back problem. She has a wonderful approach of listening, supporting and empowering. I value her knowledge and the ease in which she explains simplistically in detail what is going on and the stages to fix it. She is extremely encouraging and I get a real sense that she cares. She has wealth of knowledge about nutrition and our conversations often venture there during a treatment! I would highly recommend Dawn

Reasons why not to see an osteopath

1. It might get better on its own – this may be true, but it might just prolong the problem if you leave it too long. It might be worth you having at least an osteopathic opinion at the outset.

2. It’s too expensive – this is one point of view. It may just be that spending money on health care is not a high enough priority for you. Many osteopaths achieve good results for their patients within 3-4 treatments, which some may consider excellent value for money.

3. You don’t like being cracked – if you don’t like manipulation, then tell your osteopath. They will have many other techniques they can use instead and they will happily respect your wishes. Cracking isn’t for everyone!

WHEN TO SEE AN OSTEOPATH?

Everybody’s pain is different, so my advice is to ring your local osteopath and explain your pain. Then they will be better placed to advise you when might be the best time to have an appointment.

If you have an injury, then it may be better to wait until the worst of the pain has subsided before you have treatment. Alternatively, if you have been suffering from chronic low back pain, then it may be better to see an osteopath sooner rather than later.

Conclusion

In conclusion, osteopaths offer a unique and accessible approach to healthcare that can provide relief for many musculoskeletal conditions. Their focus on holistic treatment and plans to prevent re-occurrence or best practice management makes them a very attractive option for fast pain relief and improved function.

At New Dawn Health, Dawn stands as an excellent example of how osteopathy can be a cost-effective treatment option. Fast, patient-centred care as evidenced by her 5-star reviews on Google and testimonials uncovering the root cause of problems and offering integrated, holistic care.
